For Kimberly Banks, the decision to pursue higher education came later in life.
“Deciding to pursue education at ƹƵ at the age of 39 was a significant decision,” she said.
Enrolling in the associate in applied science in Medical Assisting program, Banks found that both classroom and lab instruction gave her the skills she needed to succeed.
“The knowledge and skills I acquired through classroom and laboratory instruction equipped me to begin working in the medical field with confidence,” she explained.
Her clinical experience also gave her a strong foundation: “During the clinical component, I gained valuable firsthand experience that provided me with a realistic understanding of the professional environment.”
After graduation, Banks gained experience working in a medical office while also supporting her husband as he pursued his associate degree in Business Administration at ƹƵ CC. Later, she began her own career at the college, where she has steadily advanced. Today, she serves as the Executive Assistant to the Vice President for Development and has been working for the State of North Carolina for more than nine years. Along the way, her daughter also became part of the ƹƵ community, enrolling in programs and graduating as well.
Looking back, Banks credits ƹƵ with opening the door to her career and paving her path forward. Her advice to students today: “The sky really is the limit! Don't sell yourself short, and it's okay if you try something and realize that you want to do something completely different.”
